Firefighters battle blaze at Strathcona Hotel

Emergency crews were on scene Friday night tackling a fire at the Strathcona Hotel in Old Strathcona.

Edmonton firefighters dealt with the flames as police diverted pedestrian and vehicle traffic on Whyte Avenue, while dozens of onlookers watched.

Whyte Avenue was  closed to traffic between 104 and 102 street.

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services District Chief Martin Prins said no one was hurt in the fire. Multiple crews and up to 40 firefighters attended the scene.

Cause of the fire has not been determined. At one point flames could be seen emerging from the top of the building.

As of midnight flames were no longer visible from across the street. Firefighters continued to work on the building’s roof and inside the structure.

The building had been under construction during the day but the hotel was vacant at the time of the fire.

Neighboring buildings were vacated by fire crews.

Andrew Parks was eating in neighboring El Cortez, he said he could smell smoke shortly before he was evacuated.

“Thank god for our firefighters,” said Parks.

Edmonton fire spokeswoman Kristi Bland said firefighters were expected to remain on scene late into the evening.
